Fellow villagers and friends of Ratley, As folk who know the value of a community facility, I am writing to let you know a bit of disconcerting news. At the end of February, the 'Rose and Crown' in Ratley will cease trading when Mary and Ken retire. The new owner of the building has no plans to continue the business as a going concern, unless it can be sold to someone who wishes to run it as a pub.
In the responses to the Ratley Parish Plan questionnaire, 80% of respondents valued the pub as a vital part of the fabric of the village, with its - monthly 'church in the pub' - award winning darts team (winter) - enthusiastic Aunt Sally team (summer) - quiz nights - New Year's Day hockey match - Bonfire Night spuds 'n' beans - regular venue for the local farming and business communities - support for the Youth Club
It's also a popular meeting place for walkers (especially as it's dog-friendly) and fans of the Sunday Roast. The place has huge potential, with a large modern kitchen and an historic, picturesque location.
Out on the sledging slopes today, it appeared that some people hadn't heard the news, so I'm using the power of the internet to let you know that there will be a public meeting to be held this week.
Wednesday 23rd January 6.45 - 7.30pm at Ratley Village Hall
The purpose is to communicate what we know, gather people's opinions and ideas and agree follow-up actions, if any.
Please pass on the message to anyone whom you think might be interested.
PS Maybe you know someone who's looking for a business opportunity?
For an extract of notes taken at the meeting please see below, under Feb 9th

Thank you to everyone who has contributed ideas so far: communications will improve via the Ratley website, a new mailing list and a dedicated email address which is already operational.

ROSE & CROWN (Last Orders Sun 24th Feb)
Villagers and regulars of The Rose and Crown in Ratley are banding together to help the new owner of the pub to find a long term solution for its future. Leamington businessman Gary Summers acquired the pub as part-payment for a debt, but as it doesn't fit his business, he is working with the community to seek a buyer.
If anyone has ideas or experience, or is interested in investing in a business rooted in a unique, beautiful and atmospheric piece of social heritage, please email email@example.com and expect a rapid response from the action group.
Mary and Ken have run the pub brilliantly for a decade, but retire at the end of February, though they will still live in Ratley. Mary is known for miles around for her lovely Irish welcome, (Roscommon, to be exact) and Ken for his eye for detail and creative talent.
The Rose and Crown has been a pub for 900 years, and has never been a private dwelling. As the only licensed public house in the parish*, it is a hugely important community asset, centre of activities as varied as the league winning darts team, quiz nights, bonfire night spuds'n'beans, Aunt Sally (that curious local game where folk throw sticks at a dolly on a peg) Mummers Plays, live music evenings, post-shoot lunches and the monthly church in the pub. The Snug is great for families, the bar is dog-friendly, and walkers on the many well-managed footpaths find a warm welcome indoors or in the sheltered, sunny gardens.
Two village meetings have kept people informed about the situation and there have been dozens of offers of help and creative options to generate a means of financial support. A small group has taken the initiative to co-ordinate local offers of help and to investigate two options, with the preferred emphasis on the first, (though there may be a possibility of a combination of the two):
.... To support the owner in finding a buyer who wants to take the business on and develop it.
..... To explore the possibilities of a community venture.
No-one is under any illusion about the difficulty of either of these in the current climate, but given the intentions of the Localism Act of 2012, the planning presumption that the premises should continue as a licensed house, the Parish Council's investigation of the route to register the premises as a community asset and the massive community support for the pub, there is some optimism about the future.
*In case of query, Ratley and Upton parish does not include The Castle Inn which in fact is in Radway parish
ROSE & CROWN - good news - 27 Feb 2013
Dear Friends, In a whirlwind of activity last week, Sharon and Dawn, experienced publicans from Warwick agreed to take over the running of The Rose and Crown for the next year. They attended Mary and Ken's leaving ceremony on Sunday evening and were made very welcome. They expressed excitement at taking on such a lovely historic pub, and bringing a few new ideas whilst actively retaining all the events and features that the community so values.
Ken and Mary were delighted with their London theatre tickets and flowers, and will continue to manage the bar until Dawn and Sharon move in on Friday 1st March.
Please call in to say 'Hello' and sample one of the new beers on offer, delivered today and already settling in that 1,000 year old cellar. Put an upbeat spin on that old warning: nearly lose it and determine to use it.

An added bonus this weekend is live music at the Rose and Crown from 8pm on Saturday 16th. As the following day is St Patrick's Day, it will of course, be an Irish duo. Shona
